Sydney's Emerald City
Our Story
Named after Sydney's celebrated title — The Emerald City — Hotel Emerald is a 1929 heritage gem in the heart of Potts Point.
The Emerald City
Sydney has long been known as ‘The Emerald City’ — a title inspired by David Williamson’s celebrated 1987 play that drew parallels between Sydney and the dazzling city in The Wizard of Oz. As Australia’s oldest and largest city, Sydney captivates with its idyllic beaches, glorious weather, and a spirit of warmth that defines its people.nnHotel Emerald takes its name from this proud legacy. Built in 1929 on Challis Avenue, our Art Deco building has witnessed nearly a century of Sydney life. Its original staircase, geometric facade motifs, and heritage details have been carefully preserved — a living piece of the Emerald City’s story.
Rooted in History
Sydney’s history runs deep — from The Rocks, the city’s oldest neighbourhood home to Cadman’s Cottage (1816) and Australia’s first hotel, to the iconic Sydney Mint that once produced 150 million gold sovereigns. Historic George Street, established in the early colonial settlement, has been a hub of commerce since the 1800s.nnHotel Emerald carries this same spirit of enduring character. What was once a residential boarding house has been reimagined as a boutique hotel that honours its origins. Every room pairs the charm of the 1920s with modern comforts — no unnecessary clutter, no forced luxury — just honest, considered spaces that feel both timeless and welcoming.
